Gov’t committed to making Ghana West Africa's financial hub – Veep

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is optimistic government’s determination to make Ghana the centre for financial services in West Africa will take off in 2018.
He noted that Ghana is in pole position to attract the major financial corporations to set up here because of its democratic credentials as a stable and peaceful country.“People are comfortable with Ghana and we should leverage that and the professionalism of our bankers to become the financial services hub of the sub-region,” the Vice President stated.

Ghana Chamber Of Commerce Awards Excellence In Business

The Ghana Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) has adjudged Mr Issa Quedraogo, the Founder of B-Bovid Company Limited, an agro-business company, as the Chamber Businessman of Year at an awards ceremony on Saturday.The awards ceremony was to celebrate the finest of businesses that have demonstrated excellence in leadership and innovation in contributing to the socio-economic development of the country.The ceremony, on the theme: 'Enterprises in Transition: Recognising Innovative Businesses in Ghana,' had President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the Guest of Honour.

Customs destroys contraband goods worth $50,000

The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has destroyed contraband goods worth $50,000 at the Korle Landfill Site in Accra.The items which were destroyed today, November 21 include cigarettes, Indian hemp, alcoholic beverages, textiles, expired food and pharmaceutical products.Chief Revenue Officer at the Customs Division of GRA, Emmanuel Adjei said, the smuggled goods were intercepted on the Eastern corridor road by officers during a routine check of evaluating consignments that come into the country.

Customs dismisses fresh agitations against paperless ports

The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has rejected claims by some business operators at the ports over the resumption of the manual clearing system.It argues that it has addressed the outstanding issues with the paperless clearing system hence the claims by the businesses cannot hold.Some clearing agents and freight forwarders last week expressed grave concern over the delay in the clearing process.In their view, the development undermines the paperless port system as it is almost three months into the implementation of the paperless port systems.

2018 budget statement

The National Youth Authority launched the STEP (Steps Towards Employment and Productivity) Project which aims at equipping 5,000 young persons between the ages of 15 and 35 with artisanal skills. The Authority organised a coaching and mentorship programme for 250 students from selected Senior High Schools in Accra and also provided skills and vocational training to 1,558 trainees at the 11 Youth Leadership and Skills Training Institutes (YLSTIs).In 2018, the Authority will implement the STEP Project under the Informal Youth Enterprise Development Programme and also commence the development of a National Youth Work Policy and Licensing.

India Exim Bank visits Ghana

The Export-Import Bank of India (EXIM India), led by the Deputy Managing Director, Mr Debasish Mallick, will be in Ghana for an initial scoping visit from November 14 to 24, 2017 to undertake Phase One of Institutional Capacity Building for the Ghana Exim Bank.The visit is to equip the Ghana EXIM Bank to facilitate the development of the small and medium enterprise (SME) sector and Non-Tradition Exports (NTE) in Ghana.Commenting on the upcoming phase one of the capacity building session, the Chief Executive Officer of the Bank, Mr Lawrence Agyinsam, said:

Ghana moves down on ease of Doing Business Index

Ghana has moved four places down on the Trading Across Borders in the latest World Bank Ease of Doing Business Report, an indication that the country introduced less reforms across its trade borders.The Doing Business 2018 Report, titled “Reforming to Create Jobs”, released last week showed that Ghana placed 120th out of 190 countries surveyed in the overall ranking of Ease of Doing Business, a drop from 108 in the previous report.Also in the sub-Saharan Africa sub-region, Ghana was not part of the top 10, coming 11th out of the 47 countries ranked in the region. This is evidence that the government implemented less reforms in the period under review to ensure the ease of doing business in Ghana.
